Winter School Closure Information

  • When the roads turn icy and slick, Bill Peterson (Transportation Director) and Dr. Ray Tolcacher (Superintendent) will be on the road each morning to check the conditions.  They begin checking the areas in town, on the Horse Heaven Hills and in the Roza Area by 4:10 am. Understanding that each area can have different road conditions, they will meet back at the District Office at about 5:15 am to assess the overall conditions.  After checking with the local police, the City of Prosser, the State Patrol and the County Roads Department, they make the first call to delay or cancel school between 5:30 and 5:45 am.  In most cases they will delay the beginning of school for two hours.  This allows a chance to see how the road conditions improve after the sand trucks have completed their jobs.

  • Once the decision to delay of cancel school has been made, the following radio stations will be contacted with the first decision by approximately 5:45 am.
    • FM Radio
      • KIOK       94.9 FM
      • CHERRY 95.7 FM
      • KXRX       97.1FM

  • By no later that 7:30 am they will make the final determination to cancel school, if a two hour delay was called in earlier.  This will depend on the existing road conditions and/or safety issues at that time.  Each school will have a sign in front of the school which will tell you if the school is delayed or closed.
  • The Prosser School District knows that a two hour delay or closure has a major impact on child care and parent work schedules.  Please understand the decision is based on the safety and welfare of our students at the time they will be coming to school.  Even though conditions may change later in the morning, at the time the call is made, the conditions necessitated it.
